Fredrick Gall

Fredrick James Gall

Fredrick James Gall, 66, of South Bend, passed away at 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Memorial Hospital.

Born in South Bend on November 29, 1954, Fred was the son of Andrew A. Gall and Pearl R. Grabarek. Being the grandchild of Hungarian and Polish immigrants, he was raised in an Old-World home, which sparked his interest in family history and ethnic recipes which he passed on to his daughter, Emily.

Fred graduated from Clay High School in 1973. He went on to attend Indiana University of Bloomington, graduating in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a minor in Economics. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and maintained long-lasting friendships with his fraternity brothers.

He was entrepreneurially minded and unafraid to take the road less traveled. Disillusioned by the conventional nine-to-five work routine, Fred founded Cut Crystal in 1999, where he sold fine European glassware until his retirement in 2017.

Fred inherited his father's passion for aviation and astronomy, earning a pilot's license and following the space program avidly. He spent many years building his own optically precise telescopes and an observatory, spending many wonderful nights stargazing with friends and family. Fred hosted "Guy's Night" every Friday, where he served his famous barbeque ribs and chicken to his friends, while sitting on the porch watching flying squirrels. Fred was also known for his love of vintage movies and traditional pop music. He was especially fond of old Hollywood icons such as Dean Martin, Béla Lugosi, Walter Brennan, and Marlon Brando. He will be remembered for his outrageous sense of humor and numerous character impressions.

Fred is survived by his daughter Emily Djellal (Merouane) of Chicago, IL, his cat Max, partner Jeanne-Marie Hoyer of South Bend, as well as numerous friends and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his paternal grandparents Andrew and Bertha (Ráday) Gall, and maternal grandparents Stanley and Josephine (Gosciniak) Grabarek.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 3, 2021 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN with memorial service to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge. Online condolences may be left at www.kaniewski.com
