Gary Lyall Sherwood Sr.

SOUTH BEND - Gary L. Sherwood Sr., 63, passed away following an illness on Sunday morning, August 17th, in Memorial Hospital.
He was born January 22, 1945, in South Bend, to Albert and Edna (Metz) Sherwood. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack. On November 9, 1968, he married the former Carolyn Kay Henley, who died September 6, 1993.
On May 4, 1996, he married the former Susan Poettgen, who survives along with his children: daughter, Shannon Speybroeck and husband, David, and son, Gary L. Sherwood Jr. and wife, Emily of South Bend. One grandchild Ryne "Little Kid" Speybroeck. Also surviving are numerous members of the Poettgen family.
Gary retired from the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department after 30 years of service. He was a member of Council Oak Lodge #745 F&AM and F.O.P. Lodge #155.
Friends may call Wednesday, August 20th, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road.
A memorial service will be held at 7:15 p.m. conducted by Council Oak Lodge. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that memorials be made in Gary's memory to the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children.
