ELKHART - Hugh L. Masterman Sr., 78, of Elkhart, passed away of natural causes in his residence at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008.

Hugh was born July 22, 1929, in Niles, Michigan, to the late George W. and Effie (Low) Masterman. Hugh was raised in South Bend, Indiana, and was a graduate of Washington-Clay High School, class of 1947.

On September 24, 1949, Hugh married the former Ms. Jean Boltinghouse in Mishawaka, Indiana. His wife Jean survives, along with their children, Margaret (Bob) Merley of LaPorte, Indiana, Linda (Jim) Payne of South Bend, Indiana, Phyllis (Russell) Johnson of Elkhart, Indiana, and Hugh (Cindy) Masterman Jr. of South Bend, Indiana. Also surviving are one brother, Bob Masterman of Niles, Michigan; and seven grandchildren, Scott Merley, Josh Payne, Hugh III and Samantha Masterman, and Jeremey, Joni and Jeffrey Johnson. Mr. Masterman was preceded in death by his siblings, Lou Grix, Margaret Masterman and George Masterman, as well as by a grandson, Bradley Payne.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 10, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, Indiana. Rev. Mardell Wilson of the Clark Memorial Church of Elkhart will officiate the funeral service at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Hugh was employed from 1950 until 1963 at the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend, and then went on to become a drill press operator for Clark's Equipment of Buchanan, Michigan, until his retirement in 1982. He also owned and operated the Masterman Stump Removal service from 1975 until 1982. In his spare time Hugh enjoyed fishing, playing cards, playing chess, traveling, working in his garden, and camping at Juno Lake. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #599 of Elkhart and Clark Memorial Church in Elkhart. In his memory, donations may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.
