SOUTH BEND, IN - Edwin L. Johnston, 81, of South Bend passed away Saturday, May 2, 2020 at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross.

Ed is survived by his daughter, Jacquie Johnston; son, Brent (Lori) Johnston; stepson, Todd Forsythe; and grandsons, Owen and Zach. In addition to his parents, Edwin is preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca (Riffle) Johnston.

Ed was born September 28, 1938 in Kimmel, IN to the late Carl and Maxine (Growcock) Johnston. In 1953, the family moved to South Bend, where Ed started his sophomore year at Washington Clay High School. He graduated in 1956 and joined the United States Army. Ed was proud to serve his country and was Honorably Discharged with the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.

Ed was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Walkerton. He was also a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union for over fifty years. He was an instructor for 25 years in the pipefitters apprentice school where he taught air conditioning and refrigeration principles. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with the younger guys. Along with his good friend Kenny Klinedinst, Ed started J&K HVAC Service in 1968 where he worked until he retired.

Funeral services for Ed will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 12 PM at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Sparta Cemetery in Kimmel, IN at 2:30 PM.
