Frances Jean Hoyt (Kelly)

Frances Jean Kelly

Jul. 12, 1930 - May 11, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Frances Jean Kelly, 85, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, at The Inn at St. Paul's. Frances, whose friends and family called her Fritzi, was born in South Bend, Indiana, on July 12, 1930, to Edward and Viola Hoyt. She was a graduate of Washington-Clay High School. Frances leaves behind her seven children: Donald Kelly, Sharon Ford, Shirley Stoops, Debra (Richard) Fabian, Thomas Kelly, Richard Kelly, and Patti Thielking. She is also survived by two brothers: Art Hoyt and Wilfred (Bud) Hoyt. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Donald Kelly, sister, Louise Singleton, son-in-law, Robert Ford, daughter-in-law, Ann Kelly, and granddaughter, Mikhaila Fabian.

She was a loving grandmother to 13 grandchildren (and many great and great-great-grandchildren), who she put stockings up for each year at Christmas. Her father built her a workshop in the backyard when she was a young girl, and it was there she learned to love working with her hands. In 1962, she married Donald Kelly, whom she met at Ball Band working as a dispatch operator. She quilted, painted, and embroidered beautifully. Frances built an entire train city, complete with moving cars, a running river, and changing stoplights. She baked and frosted the best cakes, which looked pretty enough to be displayed on a pastry shop shelf. She kept an immaculate flower garden decorated with birdhouses she built herself. To no one's surprise, Frances learned how to use a computer quickly and won over a thousand games of FreeCell in a row, many times over. She loved hummingbirds, black raspberry ice cream, and was never without a Diet Pepsi. She kept her Christmas tree up year-round, and on Tuesdays, went to lunch with her friends, Ann, Margaret, Pat, Leona and Nanette. Every time someone left her house, Frances stood in the front window and waved until they drove away. She will be dearly missed.

Visitation will be held at Bubb's Funeral Home on Sunday, May 15, 2016, from 4 - 6 pm. Funeral services will be Monday, May 16, 2016, at 11 am at Bubb's Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Alzheimer's & Dementia Services of Northern Indiana.
