SOUTH BENDGeorge L. Plain, M.D., passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, January 6, 2011.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Marie Louise Marshall Plain, "Mari." Other survivors include four children, David M. (Terry) Plain, Caren E. (Peter) Davis, George B. (Andrea) Plain, M.D., Alice M. Plain and partner, Shelli Fullhart; eight grandchildren, Bradley (Lauren) Plain, Tyler Plain, Lindsey Plain, Alex Davis, Kristen Davis, Katie Plain, Sarah Plain and Megan Plain; a sister, Sally P. (James) Schlobohm; and "adopted daughters," Anna Clift and Roswitha Wuhrer Koberle.

Dr. Plain was born in Chicago on November 15, 1931. He moved with his parents to Detroit, Michigan, where his father was a surgical resident at the Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Plain moved frequently as his father was in the Army during WW ll. He lived in Solvang, California, and was the only student in his 7th grade class at the one-room Ballard School.

Dr. Plain attended Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. It was there he met his future wife, Mari. In 1957 George received his M.D. degree from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY. Internship and Residency took him to Cooperstown, NY. He was a Research Fellow with Donald Thomas, M.D., studying the experimental effects of bone marrow transplant. Because of this research, Dr. Donald Thomas was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

In 1959, Dr. Plain volunteered for the Army. He was stationed in Washington, D.C., and worked in the Surgeon General's office and Fort Belvoir. Afterwards he returned to Cooperstown to complete his medical residency.

Dr. Plain and his family moved to South Bend in 1964 where he established a private practice in Internal Medicine. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, serving as a member of the Church's Session. He also was very involved in Camp Kooch-I-Ching, a boy's camp in northern Minnesota, serving on the Board and eventually becoming its Board Chair in 1974. Dr. Plain's association with the Stanley Clark School included serving as a board member for 13 years and nine years as Chairman of the Education Committee.

Memorial services will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, January 14th, in the First Presbyterian Church, 333 W. Colfax Ave., South Bend, with Rev. Scott Scheel, nephew of Dr. Plain, officiating. The family will receive friends in the church on Friday from noon until the service at 1 p.m. and immediately following the services until 3 p.m.
