SOUTH BEND - Melissa Ann Wharton, 34, of South Bend, passed away Monday, July 30, 2012, in her residence. Melissa was born September 16, 1977, in South Bend, to Kenneth and Jacquelyn (Brandt) Wharton.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Jacquelyn, in 2002, and her maternal grandparents, Jackson and Ann Brandt.

Melissa is survived by her father, Kenneth C. Wharton of South Bend; sister, Jennifer Lynn (Ronald) Morehouse of South Bend; niece, Bryanna Morehouse; nephews, Ronald James IV, Philip and Aaron Morehouse; grandparents, Kenneth R. and Adeline Wharton of South Bend; uncles, George Wharton of Elkhart; and her godfather, Jeff Wharton of Green River, Wyoming; many cousins; and her service dog and best friend, "Aurora."

Melissa was a member of Little Flower Catholic Church, where she was active in the Sacred Dancers, and letter and card writing committee, and a member of Midwest Assistance Dogs Incorporated.

Melissa was a graduate of Clay High School.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 6, 2012, in Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 N. Ironwood, South Bend, IN 46635. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Monday in the church. In Melissa's memory, contributions may be made to Little Flower Catholic Church.
