NECTOR ECHEVARRIA

Feb. 26, 1957 - Jan. 9, 2014
SOUTH BEND - Nector Echevarria, 56, passed away at 1:18 p.m. on Thursday, January 9, 2014, in Elkhart, IN. Nector was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, on February 26, 1957 to Ramon Echevarria and Isabel (Feliciaño) Echevarria.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ramon, and his brother, José.

Nector graduated from Clay High School in 1975. He resided in South Bend, IN and in November of 1982, he married his wife, Julie (Swartz) Echevarria. Throughout their 31 years of marriage, they were there to support each other through the toughest of times. They had an unspoken love that only they could understand, but everyone else could see. Together, they had two beautiful daughters, Elisa (Derek) Mabry, and Elena Echevarria. He was so proud that he was able to watch them group up into strong, successful women, that he often times bragged to complete strangers. Nector had two grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, and who loved him just as much: Adrian Mabry, who he called his big muchacho, and his dinky-doo, Lyra Mabry. Once he became a poppy, his life took on a new meaning. Watching him play with Adrian and Lyra made everyone's heart smile. Their time together may have been short, but their bond was so strong. Nector was the third oldest of twelve children.

He is survived by siblings: Carmen Echevarria, Angel Echevarria, Eloina (Mark) Rodgers, Primo (Sarah) Echevarria, Virjilio (Karen) Echevarria, Eduardo Echevarria, Maria (Ruben) Echevarria, Teresa Echevarria, Rosa (Brad) Kirk, and Anita (Bruce) Echevarria. He was a loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He enjoyed spending time with his family every 4th of July at his Uncle Celestino's house. He was the first to arrive and last to leave, and rallied up the troops on the volleyball court. Anyone who knew Nector knew he was a diehard Green Bay Packers fan. In fact, most of his attire was green and gold. Along with his Packers, he loved the Milwaukee Brewers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He loved going to South Bend Silver Hawks games, visits to Nashville to visit Elena, and his beloved dog, Chewie. Nector loved listening to his classic rock music. We called him an amateur meteorologist, because he loved the weather. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, and hanging with his long life friends, Grant Driver and Chuck Miller, and many of other special friends throughout the years.

The celebration of Nector's life will be at 3:00 pm Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635, where friends may visit with the family from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to Chet Waggoner Little League, 3301 Riverside Drive, South Bend, IN 46628 or the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
