William Hurst "Bill" Hennings, 71, of The Villages, Fla., died Monday, August 28, 2006. He was a retired electrical engineer for General Electric Company with 29 years of service.

He was born in Joliet, Ill., and had moved to The Villages, Fla., from San Jose, Calif., in 1994. He was a USAF veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Professional Electrical Engineers in AL and IN, Pony League Baseball for 29 years, Phi Eta Signa Fraternity at Purdue University, and the Greendale, WI, Chamber of Commerce. He received the Apollo Achievement Award in 1969 and several awards at General Electric and The Nuclear Power System. He was a board member of the American Cancer Society of Lake and Sumter counties for five years. He started the Man-to-Man Program in The Villages, and organized the CERT Program in the Villages. He was a board member of the Villages Home Association for five years and founded three prostate cancer web sites.

He is survived by his wife, Sue Jane Hennings, The Villages, Fla.; sons, Robert A. of Mount View, Calif., John W. (Christie) of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Randall T. (Monika) of Woodland, WA; daughter, Nancy D. Brody (Robert) of Hollister, CA; sister, Judith A. Cole of Leesburg, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held in the Beyers Funeral Home Chapel, Lady Lake, Fla., on Wednesday, September 6, 2006, at 11:30 a.m., with Chaplain Joe Walker officiating. Family and friends may call in the funeral home on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, from 4 to 6 p.m. Interment will follow the services at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., with full military honors conducted by the Lake County War Veterans Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lake and Sumter, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.
