James Lewis Post

Sep. 25, 1929 - Aug. 9, 2014

James Lewis "Jim" Post passed from the bounds of his beloved Nevada City, California on 9 Aug 2014.

Jim was born September, 25 1929 in South Bend Indiana to Howard F. Post and Maria "Marie" Evdovkimov a native of Ashabad Russia. The couple met when Howard was a China sailor and Maria worked in Cheefo China at a local sailor's bistro.

Jim was conversationally fluent in Russian and made many trips to Russia trying to solve the mystery of his mother family but to no avail because of sealed documents because Maria's father was a white Russian. Jim was a world traveler and visited many countries. On one such trip Jim was a consultant to the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia to help establish rare earth mining methods.

Jim's second love was his Alma Mata, The Socorro School of Mines, Socorro New Mexico, where he received his degree in mining engineering. The name has since been changed to The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology but regardless of the name it was his School of Mines. Jim went on the get his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He was a professor emeritus from Sacramento State University where he taught civil engineering for many years.

Jim liked to spend time at the old National Hotel in downtown Nevada City getting his attitude adjusted and discussing the political scene with many old friends. Jim had a keen sense of humor laced with a bit of stoic English wit. He was a true renaissance man living in a digital world. He didn't enjoy new technology but lived in his analog world using his old style manual car windows and standard transmissions. He will be missed by all as Jim Post was a fixture as he walked the streets of Nevada City getting his daily exercise. His ashes are scattered in the foot hills of the near the Yuba River in Washington, California where he is finally returned to the mountain scenes he loved so much. If you listen carefully you might hear his crystal clear laugh rippling over the bubbling water as he has returned to the land he loved.
