Robert "Herby" Hintz

Robert "Herby" Hintz, 59, of South Bend, passed away on Friday March 18, 2022 at his home. He was born on September 28, 1962 in South Bend, to the late Robert and Irene (Domnanovich) Hintz and was a lifelong area resident. He is survived by his sister, Susan Hintz and his brother, Joseph Hintz, both of South Bend.

First and foremost, Herby was a very devout Catholic who frequently attended daily Mass and had a strong devotion to The Blessed Mother. He attended Christ the King Grade School and graduated from Clay High School in 1981. He played football at Clay as both an offensive and defensive lineman, rarely missing a down. As a baseball player for Clay Township J.B.A. he won 2 Championships and won an additional Championship as their head coach for several years. He was a huge fan of all things Notre Dame from the Grotto and Basilica to his beloved ND Football. In his younger days, he enjoyed competitive golf outings with Dad and Joe and was hard to beat.

Herby was passionate about his vegetable and flower gardens and inherited his green thumb from his parents. In his small backyard plot, each year he picked over 600 cucumbers and hundreds of tomatoes, green beans, and peppers to deliver weekly to various local charities, family, and friends. His daily table of free vegetables set out in the front yard was enjoyed so much by passersby that someone once took the table as well as the veggies. On the day he passed, he had already rototilled his garden as well as Joe's garden, doing what he loved.

Herby had a quick wit, was a good storyteller, and loved to make people laugh. He lived in the family home where we were raised and he cared for our parents in their declining years. Along with his sister and brother, Herby is survived by his beloved Auntie Helen Domnanovich, Aunt Judy (Hintz) Cira, Uncles Norbert and Raymond Hintz and numerous cousins whom he loved dearly. Herby was preceded in death by our father in 2000 and mother in 2006. Also preceding him were his Grandmother Veronica Hintz, Grandfather John Domnanovich, Uncles Joe Pinter and Bill Cira, and Aunts Gertrude Pinter, Margery Hintz, and Barbara Hintz. We are lost without you, little brother, and will miss you forever!

A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday March 27, 2022 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Dr., South Bend, where the Parish Rosary will begin after visitation at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday March 28, 2022 at Christ the King Catholic Church at SR933 and Darden, South Bend, with burial to follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery at Western Ave. and Pine, South Bend.
