Shirley was always a very busy woman. She grew up In South Bend, IN and graduated Nursing School at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. During her 30+ year Nursing career, Shirley worked at several area hospitals, then did visiting nursing, ending in Industrial Nursing at American Motors. She served as President of the Indiana Industrial Nurses Association for a time, organizing and raising funds for their annual conventions in Indianapolis. Shirley was active at Coalbush United Methodist Church, Mishawaka, & particularly enjoyed cooking and baking for fund raisers and for the church Youth Group. Shirley was a great cook, even better baker, and proficient at canning, freezing, and preserving the produce from Alphons’ large garden, fruit trees & grapevines. Fresh apple pies were baked daily throughout summer and were everyone’s favorite. In winter Shirley always baked a cake or pies for the big Sunday dinner that always followed church services. With a bit of free time & space available when a couple kids went off to college, Shirley and Alphons began hosting H.S. exchange students with Youth for Understanding, later becoming Area Reps for the program. They hold a record with YFU for hosting the most students…13 that lived with us long term and many more passing thru between families. Later, Shirley and Al began hosting University students at IUSB and Notre Dame including Russian scientists sent by Gorbachev in exchange for ours sent to the USSR. Shirley and Al were able to travel the world visiting past students in their home countries. And we, Shirley’s children, are blessed with the continuing friendships of our students, their friends, and their families thru these many years. God Bless you Mom for giving us wonderful full lives. We will remember you always. Until we meet again…
