Craig A. Hartzell

Craig A. Hartzell, 73, passed away at 4:01am on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 in his home with his loving wife of 32 years by his side.

Craig was born on December 31, 1947 in South Bend to the late Eugene and Norma L. (Keeley) Hartzell.

On January 21, 1987 in South Bend, Craig married Susan E. (Nimtz). She survives along with daughters, Michelle Conway of Granger, Rachel (Joe) Waltz of Osceola; son, Chad (Kristen) Hartzell of Granger; stepson, Thomas (Susannah) Heitger of Chicago; 7 grandchildren; and brother, Donn (JoEllen) Hartzell of Minneapolis, MN.

Craig received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University at South Bend. He was a teacher for the South Bend Community School Corporation for 2 years. He taught most of his remaining 30+ years in Niles Community Schools.

Craig was a lifelong fan of drag racing and enjoyed attending NHRA races with his family and friends.  Craig competitively raced motocross dirt bikes in his early adult years and later restored Chevrolet Corvette and muscle cars as a hobby.  Craig's most favorite pastime, however, was spending quality time with his grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2-3pm on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 in Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Lakeville, IN, where a Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 3pm.  Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
