Charles 'Charley' Vernon Shields
February 23, 1930 - October 7, 2017
CULVER - Charles 'Charley' Vernon Shields, 87, of Culver, died following an illness, at 5:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 in Center for Hospice Care.

Mr. Shields was born Feb. 23, 1930 in South Bend to the late Charles F. and Catherine (Gulling), and lived in Roseland until 2008.  He is preceded in death by brothers Harley and Ronnie.  On September 4, 1954, he married the late Miriam (Darby).  Surviving are daughter, Catherine B. Shields (fiance Michael Trisch) of Granger; son, Dr. Brian D. (Jennifer) Shields of Valparaiso; grandchildren, Ethan B. and Hannah D. Shields; and sister, Bonnie (Jay) Eull of Niles, Mich.

He worked at Studebaker until entering the Army in 1951 and was stationed in Japan during the Korean Conflict.  Charley graduated from Ball State University with a degree in Education and started teaching at Clay Middle School in 1958, where he taught for three years, until his return to Studebaker's.  When Studebaker's closed in 1963, he went to Niles Community Schools, where he taught English at Ballard Middle School, and later, at Niles High School. He retired in 1993.  

Charley co-founded the Roseland Citizen's Association, was elected to the Town Board five times and served three terms as Roseland Town Board President.  He was instrumental in building the town hall and installing a police force, among his many accomplishments for the Roseland Community.  
 
Charley was a beloved husband, loving father, and caring grandfather.  He had a keen wit, an infectious sense of humor and genuine interest in developing lifelong friendships.  The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the wonderful care given to Charley by the staff and personnel of St. Joseph Regional and Miller's Merry Manor in Culver during his stays there.

Friends may call from 4 p.m.- 8 p.m., Thurs, Oct 12 at the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd, South Bend.  Memorial services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church, 511 School St, Culver on Friday, Oct. 20 at 11 a.m.
