Leonard Arwin Mitchell Jr.

Jun. 15, 1929 - Jan. 10, 2016

Leonard Arwin “Mitch” Mitchell was born on June 15th, 1929 in South Bend, IN to the late Birdie (Cummins) and Leonard A. Mitchell. Leonard had an older brother Charles who preceded him in death.

Leonard married his high school sweetheart, Marylou Mc Cormick, in 1948. Together they raised a son, Scott (Tina) Mitchell of North Liberty, In. and a daughter, Jennifer (Douglas) Dilts of Peoria, Arizona. They have three grandchildren, Brett Mitchell of Cory, PA, Chad (Cyndi) Dilts of Peoria, Arizona and Kristie (Brandon) Starnes of Surprise, AZ; and four great-grandchildren, all in Arizona.

Leonard was a lifelong resident of Clay Township and graduated from Washington Clay High School in 1947. After graduation, his part-time job with Myer’s Hardware became a full time position. He began working in contract hardware for Myer’s and with further schooling and training became manager of that department. His job entailed estimating and bidding on hardware for large commercial buildings and additions. He was always proud of the large jobs he was involved in such as the local Hospitals and South Bend School City to mention a few. Mitch retired from the hardware business after 60 years with steady employment with just the one company. He always remarked he had good bosses over the years and had no desire to change jobs.

Mitch was a long time certificate member of Bowlers Country Club. He was active in the Friday morning golf league at the club. He also ran a “skins” golf league that meets at the club on Monday and Wednesday during the warm weather. In the off season he bowled with the Monday afternoon Group. After retirement he looked forward to the winter vacations in Arizona to visit with family living there. The family would like to express our appreciation to Heartland Hospice for their excellent service and loving care shown to Leonard.

Per Mitch’s request there will be no services at this time. Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory. Entombment will be at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park Mausoleum at a later date. Memorial contributions in Leonard’s name may be made to the St. Joseph County Humane Society, 2506 Grape Rd., Mishawaka, IN, 46545. Family and friends may leave e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
