James L. Fox

Feb. 22, 1931 - Aug. 3, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Our beloved and cherished father and “Papa,” James (Jim) L. Fox, 85, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 in his home, following a brief illness.

James was born on February 22, 1931 to the late James W. and Elizabeth R. (Withers) Fox in South Bend, IN, and was a lifelong resident. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Jack Fox.

Jim was a proud graduate of Washington Clay High School, Class of 1949. Later, Jim was employed at Indiana Bell, an Ameritech Company, as a switchman and then retired on September 16, 1992 after working there for 42 years and 9 months.

On May 11, 1957, he married Marian M. Bloch, at Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. After a little more than 43 years of marriage, Marian passed away on June 7, 2000. They provided their daughters with all of the guidance, support, and love two girls could ask for; and, then, they gladly embraced their son-in-law and granddaughter in the same way.

Jim is survived by his two daughters, Diane M. Fox of South Bend, IN; Karen L. (Ted) Tompkins of South Bend, IN; his granddaughter, Nicole M. Tompkins of South Bend, IN; a sister-in-law, Ardis Fox of Melbourne, FL; and a nephew, Jeff (Stefani) Bloch of Portland, OR.

Jim was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War, where he served in the Post Signal Corps in Anchorage, Alaska. He was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church, where he served as a former Eucharistic Minister. Jim also volunteered for the church delivering food to the Homeless Center and the Y.W.C.A. He was a former usher at the Morris Performing Arts Center, and he presently volunteered as a docent for the History Museum in South Bend.

Jim enjoyed traveling, photography, and attending his granddaughter Nicole's theatrical performances. He also liked talking about football and his travels with his nephew and niece, Jeff and Stefani and their children; and, he loved telling jokes and stories to anyone who would listen. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a very kind man. His passing leaves a hurt in many hearts.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2016 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a 6:00 p.m. Parish Rosary will be prayed and followed by Words of Remembrance.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, August 8, 2016 at Christ the King Catholic Church, with Rev. Stephen Lacroix, C.S.C. officiating. A private burial with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post #284 will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 State Route 933, South Bend, IN 46637 or to the charity of the donor's choice .
