SOUTH BEND - Robert D. Von Bergen, 85, of South Bend, passed away Feb. 23, 2013, in Morning View Nursing Home. Bob was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Mishawaka, to the late Fanchon J. (Arch) and Jacob Von Bergen, and was a lifetime area resident.

Bob married the love of his life, Sylvia Mueller, on April 28, 1956, and they have been married 57 years. He is survived by Sylvia; his son, James Von Bergen, and wife, Paula Abraham of South Bend; twin daughters, Jean Musial (Glenn) of Cary, NC, and Joan Kintzele (David) of Collierville, TN; grandchildren, Chris Musial (Jennifer), Phil Musial (Liz), Kristin Gleva (John), Alicia Hess and David Hess (Emily); and three great-grandchildren, Kaylee Gleva, Cory Hess and Abraham Hess. He also leaves behind one niece and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Van Wagoner, and brother, Richard Von Bergen.

Bob graduated from Washington-Clay High School in 1946. He retired from I&M Power in 1988 as a Meter Foreman in South Bend and Buchanan. He proudly served He proudly served both the Town of Roseland on the Town Board and his country as an MP in the U.S. Army during World War II. The last 20 years he and Sylvia enjoyed traveling all over the U.S. for Army reunions with his buddies. They also enjoyed traveling to the mid-south to spend time with their daughters and families, and were able to travel to all 50 states and abroad. Bob and his son, Jim, enjoyed fishing and hunting together. He played softball and bowled in his younger years, and recently enjoyed playing Euchre with his friends at Howard Park. Bob attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church for many years. He was a 50-year member of American Legion Bendix Aviation Post 284 & was a charter member of Council Oak Lodge #745 F&AM.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Morning View and the Center for Hospice Care for the wonderful care Bob received. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, with Rev. Gregory Fiechtner officiating. Committal services and burial with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends in the funeral home on Wednesday from 9:30 until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Center for Hospice Care, Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, or to the charity of the donor's choice .
