MADELYN (DOMINICK) NOWINSKI


Jan. 10, 1916 - Sept. 11, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Madelyn Dominick Nowinski, 97, of South Bend, IN, passed away surrounded by her family at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2013, at Signature Healthcare of South Bend. She was born on January 10, 1916, to the late Andrew and Pearl (Kubiak) Dominick in Pulaski, WI.

At the age of three, she and her family moved to South Bend where she lived the remainder of her life.

Along with her parents, Madelyn was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jennifer Remmo; a sister, Virginia Pickering; a niece, Sharon Dekker; and three brothers-in-law, James Ransdell, Connie Pickering and Dr. Tom Guenther.

Madelyn was always proud to say that as a child she was taught Catechism by the Brothers of Notre Dame. She graduated from Washington Clay High School in 1935. After high school, she attended South Bend College of Commerce where she studied business. Soon after, she secured a job at Benton's Department Store, where she worked as the head Bookkeeper for several years. Madelyn later attended Indiana University South Bend and attained her Teaching Certificate. Mrs. Nowinski was an Elementary School Teacher and Artist. She taught at St. Casimir Elementary School for numerous years until the school closed. Madelyn was also a volunteer Art Teacher at Corpus Christi Grade School. She was a very active member of Corpus Christi Parish until her later years. Madelyn was a talented, mostly self-taught artist. She loved to paint, draw, and give art lessons to her children, grandchildren and other young people who were a part of her life. The culmination of her art endeavors was the design of the Stained Glass Windows and outdoor statue of the Blessed Mother- Circled by a Rosary, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in South Bend.

On January 1, 1940, at Christ the King Church, as Madelyn Pearl Dominick, she married the love of her life, Leonard S. Nowinski, who died on June 9, 1996.

Madelyn is survived by their three children: Susan Remmo of South Bend, IN, L. Scott (Kay) Nowinski of Knoxville, TN, and Sandra (Danny) Rousseve of Granger, IN; 11 grandchildren: Julie Bland of South Bend, IN, Andrew Remmo of Loveland, CO, Matthew (Karrie) Remmo of Buchanan, MI, Megan (Andy) Eggers of Niles, MI, Eric (Claudia) Nowinski of Knoxville, TN, Amy Benjamin of Mishawaka, IN, Lt. Col. Brian (Elizabeth) Nowinski of Arlington, VA, Emmilee Rousseve of Granger, IN, Daniel (Maureen) Rousseve of Granger, IN, Errol (Jessa) Rousseve of Mishawaka, IN, and Brent Nowinski of Athens, GA; 28 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Amelia (Dr. Robert) Frost of Michigan City, IN, and Phyllis Guenther of Bozeman, MT; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 2801 Corpus Christi Drive, South Bend, IN, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN. Madelyn was a kind, compassionate, loving, caring, nurturing mother and wife, who devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. "Grammie", as she was known, was the kind of grandmother that most people only dream of having. The family would like to thank Southern Care Hospice and Signature Healthcare of South Bend for the wonderful and compassionate care that they provided for Madelyn.
