Mary Ellen (McMahon) Zabik

Mary Ellen Zabik, age 85, of Drummond Island, MI passed away on October 19, 2022, at MyMichigan Health Center - Sault.

Mary Ellen was born on January 20, 1937 in Granger, IN to the late Ross and Mary Elizabeth (McDowell) McMahon. She was a graduate of Washington Clay High School with the class of 1955. During high school she was active in 4H, particularly sewing and quilting.

Mary Ellen earned her Bachelor's degree from Purdue University and later her Master's and Doctorate degrees from Michigan State University. She was a professor at MSU for 34 years. During her time at MSU she served as Associate Dean of Human Ecology. She received many awards including IFT Fellow of Food Science and distinguished professor at both MSU and Purdue University. Mary Ellen loved to travel. She visited all 50 states, most of the Canadian providences, and a total of 65 countries. Mary Ellen was an ardent patriot and student of the US Constitution.

Mary Ellen is survived by her husband: Matthew Zabik, whom she married on August 24, 1958, in South Bend, IN; her son: Jack Zabik (Jean) of Midland, MI; and her grandson: Matthew Richard Zabik.

According to Mary Ellen's wishes, no public services will be held at this time. For those wishing to commemorate her life, a donation to Hillsdale College or the Drs. Matthew and Mary Ellen Zabik Endowed Scholarship at MSU would be appreciated.
