Jay A. Guy - Class Of 1952 VIEW PROFILE

Jay A. Guy

Jay A. Guy, 89, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2023, in South Bend, IN. Born on September 7, 1933, in Chrisney, IN., Jay was the son of the late Frank B. and Mary Ruth (Dawson) Guy. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Edith Solloway Knoblock and Susan Arena.

Jay was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Dhuyvetter, on October 22, 1955, in Mishawaka. Together, they raised two sons, Jeffrey Allen (Kathy) Guy of Fort Wayne, IN., and Brian Jay (Jackie) Guy of Scottsdale, AZ. Jay was a proud grandfather to Amy Stoppenhagen of Fort Wayne and Jeffrey Guy of Washington D.C. He also had the joy of knowing his great-granddaughter, Alice Stoppenhagen.

Jay was a graduate of Washington-Clay high school and went on to attend Chicago LaSalle College, where he earned an associate degree in insurance law. He was the Divisional Sales Manager for Elkhart Brass Mfg. for 27 years. Jay was known for his fun personality and keeping his customers and co-workers happy. He loved his job and was very proud of his time with Elkhart Brass.

Outside of his professional life, Jay served as a volunteer firefighter for over 25 years and was the last volunteer fire chief for Clay township fire department. He served in the National Guard from 1952-1962. He was also an active member of Council Oak Lodge #745 F&A.M. and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, and Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder. He always enjoyed serving and helping others.

Jay and his wife, Mary Ann, cherished their winters in Fort Myers, FL. He enjoyed golf (with a cigar), poker or euchre (with plenty of laughs), and organizing an afternoon movie outing with “the boys” (with a “cold one” afterwards). His love for life was infectious, and he had a knack for making those around him smile. Despite his 15-year battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), Jay maintained a positive outlook.

Jay Guy will be remembered as a loving family man, who brought life to the party with his well-known silliness. His zest for life, resilience in the face of adversity, and unwavering commitment to his family will continue to be carried as his memory. It was a privilege to know Jay.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Darden Homes and Jay’s special aide Shareen, along with Southern Care Hospice and his favorite nurse, Sara for all their love and care they provided.

Memorial services for Jay will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family beginning at 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
