Cynthia Lynn Casper

Cynthia L. Casper

April 19, 1976 ~ May 31, 2026 (age 50)

Cynthia Lynn Casper, affectionately known to family and friends as Cindy, passed away surrounded by loved ones on May 31, 2026 at the age of 50.

Cindy took hold of her parents and siblings’ hearts from the moment she was born on April 19, 1976, in South Bend, Indiana, and never let them free from her grasp. Cindy could look into your eyes, face aglow with genuine warmth, and capture your heart. Toss in her, “I love you!” and it was over. Once she loved you, you would never be forgotten and she would talk about you fondly for the rest of her days. She had a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and cherished.

Superior was Cindy’s understanding of people. She knew how to uplift anyone with her sense of humor and could build and maintain connections with ease. Anywhere she went in town, she was recognized by old friends and turned strangers into new friends. When spending time with Cindy, the awareness of required daily obligations could often dangerously fade to a slight whisper, allowing spontaneity to overtake you. You might find yourself under the influence of her infectious giggles and broad smiles, and if music was played, her sassy dance moves. She had an energy that invited you to join in, no longer embarrassed to sing out loud and dance in front of others.

Her first doctor advised that her parents should send her away, because his faulty view of people with Down Syndrome made him believe she would only be a burden. Her parents, Gerald and Marilyn, knew better and instantly found a doctor who saw her as any other person and encouraged them to raise her in their home.

That was the beginning of the story of Cindy. Cindy, who would inspire her mother to work at Logan Center and to be a founder of Michiana Down Syndrome. Cindy, who often accompanied her mother and father on visits with families of newborn children with Down Syndrome. Cindy, who would serve as an ambassador to demonstrate to parents that although their baby may need different supports, he or she could live a full and joyous life. Cindy, who learned to read and write. Cindy, who would go on to compete at the 1987 International Special Olympics in gymnastics. Cindy, who graduated from Clay High School in 1995 and enthusiastically worked many jobs. Cindy, who loved to sing, dance, and play guitar in front of large crowds. Cindy, who was fiercely loyal and advocated for friends and family who could not always advocate for themselves.

Music was an important part of Cindy’s life. She performed with Michiana Performing and Adaptive Arts, led by her beloved teacher, Jetta Cruse, and participated in ballroom dancing. Cindy had a competitive nature and was an athlete of many sports including basketball, bowling, softball, bocce ball, tennis, horseback riding, karate, soccer, cross-country skiing, swimming, and gymnastics. She loved to draw, color and create artwork. Cindy was deeply connected to the community she called home. Through organizations like Michiana Down Syndrome, Corvilla, Adaptive Arts, Logan, and Michiana Special Olympics, she formed friendships that enriched her life and the lives of others. Family and friends will remember how she never hesitated to speak up when someone was left out, often insisting there was always room for one more at the table or on the dance floor.

In recent years, she faced the challenge of Alzheimer’s disease, a complication experienced by some aging individuals with Down Syndrome. She was no longer as independent and began to require assistance with daily needs. In 2019, she moved in with her brother, John. She grew extremely close to her caregivers Kathryn, Rachel, and Tonya, and was always supported by her devoted siblings. Throughout the progression of Alzheimer’s, she fought to remain involved in her activities for as long as possible and maintained her relationships.  We would like to also thank all the wonderful staff and residence of Cardinal Nursing Home. They welcomed her with open arms and provided a loving community at her journeys end.

Cindy treasured her family and was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and cousin. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald A. Casper and Marilyn (Enfield) Casper, her brotherin-law, Doug Healy, and many dear aunts and uncles. She is survived by her siblings David (Sandy) Casper of Buchanan, Michigan; Becky Healy of Mishawaka, Indiana; John Casper of Granger, Indiana; Julie (Mike) Flanigan of Niles, Michigan; and her “sissy,” Kathryn (Keller) Casper. Cindy is also survived by Sam Panzica, her boyfriend since elementary school. She will be missed deeply by her nieces and nephews: Sara, Jenny, Kaleigh, Brooke, Courtney, Alec, Jesse, Jacob, Rachel, and Laura.

If asked what color she’d be, she’d say pink and purple, but those who knew Cindy best knew she was truly a rainbow — colorful, vibrant, full of stories, laughter, music, and love. She brought sunshine into every life she touched.
