James Bradley Derbin - Class Of 1968

The “DERB”

Nov. 24, 1947 - Dec. 4, 2018

SOUTH BEND, IN -
James Bradley Derbin, better known as “DERB”, was born to the late John and Jean Derbin in South Bend on November 24, 1947. Derb is survived by his sister, Janice Derbin Mack; brother-in-law, Mike; and two nieces, Emily and Michaela Mack.

Derb was best known around town as the unofficial mascot for Clay High School. He loved attending all basketball, football, and baseball games. The family has always appreciated the gracious acts of generosity shown to Derb. Over the years, Derb was allowed to ride on the team bus to away sporting events, and given a letter jacket, numerous t-shirts, hats, and uniforms. Derb was known for standing on the side lines cheering on the team, giving motivational speeches in the locker room during half time, singing “Take me out to the ball game” at baseball games, being homecoming king, ‘the SECRET Weapon”, getting the crowd cheering on the sidelines with his infamous “HI O-O-“ and doing the “Derb Shuffle”. He would commonly be seen on all local TV Friday night sport highlights.

Derb was also an avid fan of Notre Dame football and both men and women's basketball. He had season tickets to the games and was known by many ushers and season ticket holders over the years. He would regularly direct the football ushers singing “God Bless America” prior to home football games.

Derb was a gentle giant. Everyone who met Derb loved him because of his sweet and gentle demeanor. He made friends whereever he went. He was the eternal optimist. He loved his sports and would often provide very accurate predictions for any games or play calls.

Derb also loved his church and church family. He attended Timberland Bible Church. He loved music. He played the bongo drums or tambourine every Sunday at church.

Unfortunately, on December 4, 2018, James Derbin succumbed to his kidney and heart failure. This past summer he became a full time resident at Healthwin. He called Healthwin “home”. There are not enough words of appreciation to the Healthwin Nursing staff for his wonderful care.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted on Dec. 8, 2018 at Timberland Bible Church, 16623 State Road 23, South Bend, Indiana 46635. The service will take place at 11:30am. Attendees are encouraged to wear Notre Dame or Clay High School attire. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Timberland Bible Church.
