In Memory
David Joseph Cherrone
May 8, 1953 ~ August 19, 2025
Dave Cherrone, 72, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at home. Born in South Bend on May 8, 1953, to the late Elizabeth (Kantz) and John Cherrone Sr. Dave often repeated Jimmy Buffett’s sentiment: “Some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic, but I had a good life all the way”.
While attending Clay High School, Dave got an early start to his lifelong work experience at Bonnie Doon Drive-In. At the age of 17, his parents signed the consent form for him to become a Volunteer Firefighter with Clay Township Fire Department for what Dave intended to be just one summer as he was already planning his path toward becoming an attorney. Little did he know that summer would end up lasting 52 years. After making the transition from volunteer to paid firefighter, Dave began working on his Associate’s Degree in Fire Science. Being the first to achieve this at that small department, he opened a window of opportunity and was an example to others as to what they too could achieve. Some 3 or 4 years later he abandoned his original intention of becoming an attorney and had the fire bug!
Dave took advantage of every opportunity he could find to further his knowledge and education. Throughout the next 52 years there were many firsts, accomplishments and accolades. His commitment to safety and service was evident in his work, where he not only protected but also educated the community he loved. His involvement in various associations reflected his passion for his profession and his unwavering dedication to the betterment of others. While he received more than enough awards to line his office walls, most were tucked away or taken home without mention. He very humbly accepted the Indiana Fire and Life Safety Educator of the year, the Ideal Baldoni Distinguished Public Service award and was twice awarded the S. Paul Cahill Community Service Award among many others. There are too many to mention but three of the things he was most proud of accomplishing were the mobile fire safety house, the fire truck book reading program at the local library and the Pink Heals Fire Truck. Never one to think you can learn enough, he completed his Bachelors of Science in Fire and Emergency Management from Purdue University Global shortly after retirement.
Dave married the love of his life, Izzy on May 26, 1978, and they were an amazing duo for 47 incredible years. He was a fun, loving dad to his son, Joe (Kinsey) Cherrone of Charlotte, MI; daughter, Lisa (David) McCreary of Granger, IN. Eli, Gavin and Austin will greatly miss their grampa’s infectious laughter, tireless energy and unending love. He left them a legacy of love.
Dave is also survived by his brother Ray (Pat) Cherrone of South Bend, Indiana, along with their children Chad (Lisa) Cherrone and RaeAnn (Laz) Martinez. Sister-in-law Rose Cherrone of South Bend, Indiana and daughters Laura (Bill) Talcott, Lynn Cherrone, and Terri (Brad) Miller. Aunt Rosali Cherrone and daughter Beth Ann (Chris) Mantoan. He was preceded in death by his brother John Cherrone, Jr.
Dave will be greatly missed by all those lives touched by his love, generosity and work ethic. To honor his memory, remember the 2 words imprinted on the back of his helmet: Be Nice
Services will be held on Monday August 25, 2025 at Granger Community Church; 630 E. University Dr. Granger, IN 46530. Visitation will take place from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, immediately followed by a memorial service. Dave always said when it comes time to bid him goodbye, no need for your Sunday best, come comfortably dressed.
