In Memory
Philiip John Seybold
Mar. 23, 1967 - May 11, 2025
On May 11, 2025, Phil Seybold passed away at Reid Hospital following a catastrophic stroke. Phil was born on March 23, 1967, in South Bend, Indiana, to William and Miriam Canen Seybold.
He was the youngest of five children and the highly anticipated little brother to big brother Bill, Jr.
Phil grew up in the Arlington Heights neighborhood, where he had countless adventures with friends. These early years sparked his deep love and appreciation for the Great Lakes, and he spent as much time as possible enjoying lake life. A self-described “fun junky,” Phil loved to ski, hike, bike, and sail. He was an artist who could see potential in anything—a person, a blank canvas, or a pile of old lumber. He had a gift for bringing out the best in everyone and everything.
As his boys grew up, Phil stayed actively involved in their lives, coaching youth sports and serving as Scout Master of Troop 1832 for several years. He didn’t waste time on anger or resentment—his heart always forgave and moved forward.
Phil graduated from South Bend Clay High School in 1985 and earned a BS in Anthropology from Ball State University in 1993.
In August 1991, Phil married Josie Golliher of Hagerstown, whom he met while coaching her college dorm’s powderpuff football team. Josie had never been interested in football—until she met Phil (wink-wink). Their marriage never had an unhappy day. Together, they raised two amazing sons, Alanson and Harrison. As a devoted father, Phil passed on his love for the Great Lakes, history, the outdoors, and environmental stewardship. He was always seeking ways to care more deeply for the planet.
Phil is survived by his wife of 33 years, Josie; his sons, Alanson Seybold (Madi) and Harrison Seybold (Jessica); and his grandchildren, Audrie and Ayden. He is also survived by his siblings: Dawn Hawkins (Mark), Bill Seybold, Jr. (Janice), Tammy Hoersten (Steve), and Janet Rudasics (Dean), step-sisters Alice and MaryCille, and stepmother, Marilyn Seybold.
On Josie’s side of the family, he is survived by his mother- and father-in-law, Linda Wright (Ken) and Alan Golliher; sister-in-law Susanne Lumsden (Boyd), brothers-in-law Chuck Golliher (Lori), Brian Golliher (Julie), Tom Golliher (Ashley), Daniel Golliher, Matthew Golliher (Devra), and Joe Golliher (Aubrie). He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Aaron, Sarah, Casey, Adam, Matthew, Carl, Jennifer, Owen, Ryan, Lindsey, Quin, Addy, Olivia, Chase, Bess, Ben, Zach, Gus, Mac, and Everett.
Also surviving is his beloved “symbiote,” Rocco (a dog who, doesn’t know he’s a dog), and dear friends Doug and Cindy Henderson.
In keeping with his wishes and true to his spirit, Phil was an organ donor (reduce, REUSE, RECYCLE).
Phil was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Ken Wright.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 PM on Friday, May 16, at Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown. Services will be at 2 PM on Saturday, at the funeral home. Pastor Rick Alvey will officiate.
In lieu of flowers (Phil preferred the living over the dead), please consider donating to: Save the Dunes, in honor of his love for the Great Lakes; Cope Environmental Center, in honor of his advocacy for the planet; or The Josie Seybold Fund at Centerstone of Indiana, in honor of his time as a dynamic Family Support Specialist, mentoring youth in our area.
