Kelly Jo Gallagher, beloved mother, sister, daughter and aunt, passed away unexpectedly on July 25, 2025, at the age of 56.
Born on January 31, 1969, in LaGrange County, Indiana, Kelly spent her early years in the small town of Topeka. While in Topeka, she enjoyed participating in 4-H and showing horses and she was a cheerleader and a volleyball player for Westview High School. At age 16, she moved to South Bend, Indiana, where she attended Clay High School and was a member of the Clay High School Pom team. Kelly graduated from Clay High School in 1987 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ball State University in 1991.
Kelly was the mother of three children: Jackson Ryan Gallagher, Reed Johnston Gallagher, and Ciara Jean Humeston. She had a deep love for her kids and her family. She was also a proud and deeply involved aunt to Kevin Johnston, Carter Johnston, Brooke Bognar, and Elaina Bognar, creating cherished memories with each of them.
She is survived by her mother, Barbara Johnston; her sister, Erin Bognar (Brian); and her brother, Chad Johnston (Sarah). She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Johnston.
Kelly dedicated much of her professional life to local government, working with both the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office and the St. Joseph County Circuit Court. She brought a sense of fairness, compassion, and diligence to her work, and was respected by all who had the privilege of working alongside her.
Kelly embraced the South Bend community and was actively involved in civic life as a member of the Junior League and the Rotary Club. She gave generously of her time and heart, always ready to support a cause or uplift someone in need.
Kelly had a vibrant spirit and a heart full of love. She was incredibly personable, known for her warmth, thoughtfulness, and the genuine way she connected with others. Her kindness touched everyone who knew her. She loved animals, visiting the beach and getting sun, and the laughter from gatherings with family and friends.
She was a proud foodie and had a creative flair in the kitchen. Whether trying new recipes or exploring local restaurants, Kelly believed in the power of a good meal with friends and family. Time with her children, nieces, nephews, and loved ones brought her the greatest joy.
Kelly’s beautiful soul, joyful energy, and generous heart will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
