Kay Elaine (Rupert) Heston
Mar 10, 1948 - Jul 23, 2026
Kay Elaine Heston, 78, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
Born on March 10, 1948, in South Bend, Kay was the daughter of Charles and Vera (Northup) Rupert. She was a lifelong resident of the South Bend area and built a life centered on hard work, education, family, and service to her community.
Kay earned her bachelor’s degree in political science, a reflection of her inquisitive mind and lifelong appreciation for learning. She spent many years working as a telephone operator with AT&T, formerly Indiana Bell, in the telecommunications industry. She also worked at the University of Notre Dame in the north dining hall, where she enjoyed talking with students and hearing of their lives and encouraging them to keep at the work.
Kay is lovingly remembered by her children, Lori Ann Dixon, Lori Heston, and Shawn Heston. She is also survived by her sister, Tamara (Randy) Beaman; her brothers, Daniel (Dotti) Rupert and Kevin (Mike) Rupert; along with extended family members and many friends who will cherish her memory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Vera Rupert.
Kay will be remembered for the innumerable quilts she hand-crafted for family and especially children at the cancer hospitals and children around the world. Every quilt had a story behind it and was intricately sewn into a masterpiece of love. She wrote passionately about life on the daily and never passed up a cup of coffee with milk and sugar. Her heart’s desire was for her children to thrive in every aspect of life. She is greatly missed by all her family.
Entombment has already taken place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home, Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN 46635, is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
