Larry "Dean" Edward Sowell

Larry "Dean" Edward Sowell, 77, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on June 14, 2025. Born on October 27, 1947, in South Bend. Larry was the son of Edward Sowell and Hertha (Shelley) Sowell. He proudly served in the United States Air Force and later built a long and accomplished career in Information Technology as a Systems Administrator.

On August 3, 1968, Larry married the love of his life, Maureen Sowell, with whom he shared over five decades of marriage until her passing in 2024. Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter Shannon (Bradley) Rutkowski of South Bend, IN; his sons, Sean (Lori) Sowell of St. Augustine, FL and Shane (Jennifer) Sowell of Prospect, KY. He is also survived by his six beloved grandchildren: Tyler Rutkowski, Bailey Rutkowski, Tristan Sowell, Alyssa Sowell, Becca Sowell, and Emma Sowell. Larry is also survived by his sisters Linda Ellis of Huntington, IN; LuAnn (Greg) Carroll of Huntington, IN; Lori Burgan of Plainfield, IN; and Lisa (Kevin) Brubaker of Huntington, IN.

A lover of the outdoors, Larry often enjoyed hiking or biking at Brown County or Clifty Falls State Park. He served as a Boy Scout leader for his sons and cherished time spent with his grandchildren and extended family. Always well-informed, he was rarely without the news on in the background.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 12:00 noon, at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel, South Bend, IN. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN.

Memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association or the Paralyzed Veterans of America in honor of Larry’s memory.
