Eugene L. Hartzell

SOUTH BEND - Eugene L. Hartzell, 92, of South Bend, passed away at Memorial Hospital Sunday, February 15, 2015.
Mr. Hartzell was born January 11, 1932, in South Bend, to the late Chester and Esther (Dieske) Hartzell. Also preceding him in death was a sister, Geraldine Auer. On February 10, 1946, he married the former Norma L. Keeley, who died in 1995. He is survived by two sons, Craig A. (Susan) Hartzell of South Bend and Donn (Jo Ellen) Hartzell of Minneapolis, MN. Three grandchildren, Michelle Conway, Chad (Kristin) of South Bend, and Rachel Waltz (Joe) of Osceola; and six great- grandchildren.
After graduation from Washington Clay High School Eugene served in the United States Army in the Philippines as a communications specialist during WW II. After his honorable discharge in 1945, Eugene graduated from the South Bend College of Commerce. He became a salesperson for Circle Lumber and Romy Hammes Ford before becoming a time-keeper for Sollitt Construction Co. Eugene continued his career as a salesperson for Simon Brothers Company from which he retired after 30 yrs.
Eugene was a lifetime member of Community Congregational Church on Cleveland Road over 80 years. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd., where friends may visit with the family 2 hours prior to services. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Eugene's memory may be made to The Ronald McDonald House at Memorial Hospital, 615 N. Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46601.
