ELMER H. HILL

May 4, 1921 - June 8, 2007
LAPORTE - Mr. Elmer H. Hill, 86, of Auburndale, Florida, passed away Friday, June 8, in his home after succumbing to cancer. Mr. Hill was born in Teffet, Indiana, on May 4, 1921.

He moved with his family to South Bend, Indiana, where he grew up and graduated from Washington Clay High School in 1939. He married Dorothy Myers his high school sweetheart, on July 4, 1941.

Following a tour of duty in the United States Navy he moved with his wife to LaPorte, Indiana, to raise a family. He owned and operated Bennett's Inc., a center for appliances and home furnishing from 1944 to 1983 when he retired with his wife to Florida. Mr. Hill belonged to the American Legion, Elks Lodge, Scottish Rite and was a mason. He was a volunteer for the Polk County School Board and was honored as Volunteer of the Year for Lake Region High School. The Lake Region E.H. Hill Softball Complex was dedicated to him in the spring of 1997. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Auburndale. He was a man dedicated to his family.

Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Hill of Auburndale, FL; daughters, Barbara (James) Fuller of Carmel, Indiana, Patricia (Tom) Butler of Auburndale, FL, and Nancy (Wayne) Richey of Madison, Indiana; a sister, Betty Jane (James) Crowell of Granger, Indiana; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; three nieces and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mr. Hill's name be made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, in the Kersey Funeral Home, 108 East Lake Stella Drive, Auburndale. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL, with full military honors.
