MARGARITA (COUCH) HUMPHREY

Sept. 17, 1917 - Dec. 16, 2010
SOUTH BEND - On December 16, 2010, God wrapped His arms around Margarita C. (Couch) Humphrey to be with Him and the love of her life, James Humphrey. Also, preceding her in death were her brothers, Victor, James, Joseph, Leo, Fred and Howard Couch.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her beloved sister, Cecilia Bauters (Joe); her nine children, Kathleen Hinnegan, Jim Humphrey (Peg), Jeanne Marie Wear, Robert Humphrey (Dianne), Thomas Paul Humphrey, Therese Humphrey, Joseph Humphrey, Mary Cecilia Pinkowski (Scott), Michele McLaughlin (Pat); her grandchildren, Jennifer Hinnegan, Francis Hinnegan III, Trisha Humphrey, Kim Humphrey, Orin Wear (Jen), Heather Budzinski (Mike), Melissa Riem (Matt), Matthew Humphrey, Thomas Humphrey, Maria Beck (Bob), Tony Schirripa (Allyson), Cecilia Gobdel ("Ivan"), Justin Berryman (Tara), Rachel Berryman, Christian Pinkowski, Joshua Pinkowski, Patrick McLaughlin, Alicia Roennow (Emil); and her 20 great-grandchildren.

Margarita was a lifelong resident of South Bend, a "country girl" and a city girl. At Washington Clay High School, Margarita was the captain and star point guard of the first all-girls basketball team for four years. She continued playing basketball for the CYO, where she met Jim, who ref'd her games. After a two-year courtship, they were married on December 30, 1942, when Jim surprised her with a three-day furlough he was able to procure from the Army.

Margarita was a stay-at-home-mom until her youngest child, Michele, was in school, at which time she became a crossing guard; her main area was Perley School. She retired from that job to be a stay-at-home- grandma. Margarita and Jim made the rounds to all of the grandchildren's book fairs, concerts and sporting events, not to mention all of the birthday parties and times at Lake Cora (Fleabag). Margarita left a legacy of love, laughter and life. Smile God Loves You! Good Bye, God Bless, Have a Good Day!
