John D. Downey, 61, of 910 E. Ewing, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday in St. Joseph's Hospital after an extended illness. He was superintendent of maintenance at Sibley Machine & Foundry Corp. Born on March 19. 1916, in Vincennes, he lived here 55 years, coming from Vincennes.

On March 17, 1942, in Fort Polk, La., he married Virginia Hathway, who survives, along with six daughters, Mrs. Charlett Hollett of Cincinnati, Ms. Patricia Herman of Evanston. Ill., Mrs. Catherine Sego of Niles. Ms. Elizabeth Downey of Walnut. Calif.. Mrs. Pamela Plouhar of South Bend. and Miss Carol Marie Downey, at home; a son, John, at home; five grandchildren; two sisters. Mrs. Alma Myers of Tampa, Fla., and Mrs. Dorothy Kryder of South Bend, and two brothers, Clement H. Jr. of New Carlisle, and Paul E. of Tampa.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Matthew's Cathedral with Bishop Joseph R. Crowley. officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Guisinger Colonial Chapel.

Downey was a member of St. Matthew's Cathedral; the Holy Name Society: Council 553. Knights of Columbus; and the American Foundry Men's Society. He was a World War II veteran.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society of the Heart Fund. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home
