Lawrence D. Schmidt

Lawrence Daniel Schmidt, 85, of South Bend, passed away after an extended illness on Tuesday morning, July 1 9th, in the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in South Bend. He was born in South Bend, Indiana, on October 12, 1919, to the late Joseph and Genevieve (Reeves) Schmidt.

Larry was employed at the Studebaker Corp. for 23 years until their closing. He retired in 1982 from AM General, where he was employed in production control. He was a member of the Evangel Heights United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bessie Mae (Garrett) Schmidt, and one brother, Robert J. Schmidt.

Lawrence is survived by one son, Daniel (Sue) Schmidt of Gerrards Cross, United Kingdom; and one daughter, Rae Anne (Jim) Grounds of Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also survived by six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call from 1 1 a.m. to noon in the Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, 114 N. Ironwood Drive, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at noon in the church, with Rev. Patrick Somers officiating. Burial is to follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Bubb Funeral Chapel North is handling all arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, 114 N. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, IN; or to the Alzheimer's Services of Northern Indiana, 108 N. Main St., Suite 707, South Bend, IN 46601.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the entire nursing staff as well as the administration of the Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center for their kind and loving care given to Bessie during the last month of her life, and the past year-and-a-half of Larry's life.
