Norris Lockman Obituary

March 16, 1931 - Feb. 9, 2012


SOUTH BEND - Norris Andrew Lockman, 80, was born March 16, 1931, and died February 9, 2012. He was born in Floyd Knobs, Indiana, to Kenneth and Edna Lockman. He was preceded in death by both parents, and sisters, Lydia McWhirter and Laura Pritchett. He graduated from Georgetown High School in 1950 and joined the Army after graduation. He served his country by serving in Germany as a medic. Through the GI Bill Norris was able to attend Olivet University in Kankakee, IL, in 1957, earning his Bachelor's in Education, and his Master's of Education from Indiana State University in 1958. Norris' love of education continued by earning grants and scholarships so he could attend other universities including Hope College, Holland, MI, Purdue University, Lafayette, IN, the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, and Indiana University of South Bend. Norris joined the staff of South Bend Community School Corporation in 1958 at Washington-Clay teaching physics, chemistry and biology. Later in his career he taught Earth Science, after earning various additional certificates. After 34 years of teaching he retired and moved to Cory, IN, in 1992 to be closer to family. Norris married the love of his love and life partner Wilma (Halt) Lockman on June 7, 1957, in Cory, Indiana, at the Cory Church of the Nazarene. His wife, Wilma, survives along with his children, Darla (Otis) Wilson of South Bend, David Lockman of Cory; grandson, Austin Lockman of South Bend; brother, Cecil Lockman, and sister, Lelah Herman, both of Floyd Knobs, IN; and many nieces and nephews. While Norris and Wilma lived in South Bend, Norris served on the Church Board and as treasurer at South Bend First Nazarene and on the Church Board in Cory. During his retirement Norris enjoyed both his vegetable and flower gardens, as well as traveling to Florida and visiting with friends and family in different areas of the state. His other hobby was reading, and you could always find him with something in his hands. He showed his love for God and family every day that he was with us. French Funeral Home of Brazil, IN, has been entrusted with arrangements. The viewing will be held on Monday, February 13, from 4 pm - 7 pm at Cory Church of the Nazarene, and funeral will be held on Tuesday, February 14, at 1 pm at the Cory Church of the Nazarene. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Riley, IN, following services.
