MISHAWAKA - Artheda J. Spencer, 72, of Merrifield Avenue, died at 7:45 p.m. Monday in her home after an illness. Mrs. Spencer retired from South Bend Community School Corp. as a music teacher and served as orchestra director from 1965-85, was a former teacher at DePauw University, and was a private piano and cello teacher. She was born Jan. 8, 1922, in South Bend and lived in South Bend most of her life.
On June 18, 1949, in South Bend, as Artheda J. McFaul, she married Harley O. Spencer. He died April 4, 1974. She is survived by a daughter, Sarah E. Winter of Campbell, Calif.; a grandson; and a brother, Frederick McFaul of South Bend. She was a graduate of Saint Mary's College and the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music. She was a member of South Bend Symphony for 40 years and a former section leader of the South Bend Youth Symphony.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church. Cremation will take place. There will be no visitation. Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc.
