SOUTH BEND - Mary Ellen Widner, 91, Indianapolis, formerly of South Bend, died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis. She was born on April 7, 1919, in Rensselaer, IN, to the late Lewis C. and Frieda (Sard) Hooker. She married James R. Widner on November 16, 1942, in South Bend. He passed away in 1997. Mary graduated from Rensselaer High School in 1936 and South Bend Business College in 1938. She retired in 1981 from the South Bend Community School Corporation after serving in various administrative positions at Jackson and Clay High Schools. As a member of First Christian Church, South Bend, she served as Deaconess, participated on several committees, and was active in the Fellowship Club Sunday School class and the Christian Women's Fellowship. Mary greatly enjoyed her grandchildren, especially when they visited her while she wintered in Bradenton, Florida. She was an avid bridge player and bowler. Survivors include a daughter, Sue (Jon) Pryweller, Indianapolis; a son, James L. (Sara) Widner, Wabash; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Alison and Jordyn Pryweller, Eric Widner and Brett (Sheena) Widner; and a great-granddaughter, Brooke Widner. Mary was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, May 10 at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, 375 W. Cleveland Rd., Granger, IN with Dr. William J. Wassner, former pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 1101 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46617. Aaron-Ruben-Nelson Mortuary, Zionsville, IN, entrusted with arrangements.
