SOUTH BEND - Charles E. Martin Sr., 50, of 208 Burbank St., died at 6 a.m. Thursday in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, after an illness.
Mr. Martin was executive director of the Community Service Branch of the South Bend YMCA. He was born Aug. 3, 1943, in Jackson, Tenn., and lived in South Bend most of his life.
On June 21, 1969, in South Bend, he married Patricia Ann Johnson. She survives with a daughter, Jenelle Martin of South Bend; two sons, Charles Jr. of Indianapolis and Rodrick of South Bend; two sisters, Gracie Martin of South Bend and Phyllis Glend of Los Angeles; and two brothers, James Martin of Long Beach, Calif., and John Martin of South Bend.
He was a member of the Scholarship Committee and Board of Directors of the Hoosier Fund for Excellence, Kiwanis Club of South Bend, Indiana Black Expo Scholarship Committee, South Bend Community School Corp. Youth-At-Risk Committee, Minority Achievement Committee, and Parents Communication Network; Admissions Advisory Council, Ball State University; Kappa Alpha Psi National Fraternity, Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation of St. Joseph Co. and Scholarship Committee, and Parkview Juvenile Diversion Advisory Board. He was chairman of Outreach Committee, Healthy Babies Project; Fine Entertainment Committee, and on Steering Committee, Forums for Youth Self Sufficiency.
He was Official Student Recommender, Indiana University, Bloomington Groups Special Service Program; founder and President of the Black Community Scholarship Fund, Inc.; Advisor, Leaders and Positive Role Models, Inc.; Sponsor/ Advisor of Ladies of Distinction, and on the Board of Directors of South Bend School Boosters.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 North Adams St. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. in convention Hall C of Century Center, where a memorial wake service will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Alford's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
