May 4, 1951 - January 27, 2025
Peggy J. Shaffer passed away January 27, 2025, with her family by her side at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville SC from quick progression of Alzheimer’s/Dementia. After living in Elkhart most of her life, she moved in with her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Monica, in Mauldin SC in November of 2023. Because of complications due to her disease, she had been in a nursing facility since June 2023 until her passing.
Peggy is survived by her son, Jerry (Monica) Stevenson of Mauldin SC, and their children, Wayne with Amber Ruggles, Kylie with Charlie Brice and David, a daughter Angela (Derek) Long of Edwardsburg MI and her daughter Tiffany and son Jake Ward with great-grandchild Castle. Her brother Mike and her sisters Marion and Karen.
Peggy was born May 4, 1951, to the late David and Marion (Weaver) Williams of South Bend IN, and also preceded in death by her sister Kris and brother-in-law Steve Soule and niece Gwynn. She grew up in South Bend then moved to Elkhart.
Peggy attended Clay High School along with her 3 sisters and brother.
Her first real career was after beauty college when she became a hairstylist, serving 15 years at J. C. Penney beauty salon. Then owning her own shop (Artistics) for a few years followed by working in downtown Elkhart at Studio 327. Nobody was a stranger to her. She would talk to anyone. This may be what drew her to becoming a hair stylist. She was quite personable and outgoing.
Afterwards she worked in a few factories until she ended up at EKF. Here she worked purchasing/receiving and administrative duties until retiring in 2021.
Peggy loved the flowers that grew outside her home in Elkhart that she had picked out and planted. Loved watching the birds that would visit her feeder all year. She would always watch the deer and other wildlife that would visit her home in Elkhart.
She couldn’t escape family, being the second youngest of the bunch. She loved to be in touch with her family, immediate and extended. Enjoyed seeing close and distant family members at the family reunions. Peggy would keep up on her friends' careers and activities.
She was a good mother trying to do what was best for her children. Making sure they did many things like camping, swimming, art, sports and cheerleading. Later on, grandchildren come into the scene. She followed Jake with his tennis and Tiffany's bowling while in high school. She loved to get together for Christmases, birthdays and summer outings at Derek and Angie's and travel to South Carolina to be with Jerry and Monica's family for Thanksgivings. Started following Clemson football since her oldest grandson Wayne went there for college but also, from growing up in South Bend, rooted for Notre Dame. She encouraged Kylie with her cosmetology and David in Chorus through high school.
Memorial visitation will be will be Friday, March 14th from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 10776 McKinley Hwy, Osceola, IN 46561.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Peggy to Alzheimer's Association 225 N Michigan Ave. Floor 17 Chicago, IL 60601.
