Gene F. Stockdale

SOUTH BEND - Gene F. Stockdale, residing in South Bend, passed away at 1:07p.m. Monday, August 15, 2016 at Southfield Village, South Bend. He was 93 years old. He was born September 6, 1922 in Denver, IN, a son of Curtis & Ruth (Livengood) Stockdale.
Gene graduated from Indiana University-Bloomington with a BA & MA in Business. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from January 12, 1944 until his honorable discharge as a Sergeant on May 27, 1946. Part of the tour of duty in Europe was served in the Battle of the Bulge. He moved to South Bend in 1950 and taught Business at the former Washington-Clay High School. The following school year, he accepted a position as Assistant Superintendent of Business with the South Bend Community School Corp. He held that position until his retirement in 1983. Following retirement, Gene taught classes at Bethel College, Mishawaka for several years. He was a founding member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church, and was active there for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion.
On May 29, 1951 in Kokomo, IN Gene was united in marriage to Martha J. Berry. He is survived by his loving wife Martha of 65 years, along with his two daughters, Carol Sue (Joseph) Dyrcz of Tyner, IN; and Cindy Stockdale of South Bend. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Jamila Stockdale and Martin Dyrcz, five great-grandchildren, Tyran, Symone, DeQuain, Destiny, and Sydney, as well as three great-great-grandchildren, MiaBella, Kaydan, and Kymayla, and his sister, Jane Soblotne of Indianapolis.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Jenny Helmuth and Virginia “Trudy” Stockdale, and brothers, David and Glenn Stockdale.
Services will be at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, August 20, 2016 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan Street, South Bend. Rev. Steve Meck will officiate. Graveside service with military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 -7:00 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home.
