Richard Sutherland

Richard Sutherland was born on August 30, 1966, to the union of Joe Sr. and Geneva Sutherland. Richard was a devoted son who deeply honored and cherished his parents throughout his life and beyond their passing.

In 1998, Richard married Cathleen Cane-Sutherland and built their family together, including their three children, Bryonna Cane, Richard “Andrew” Sutherland, and Alexander Sutherland, and one beloved grandson, Carter Cane.

Richard was a 1985 graduate of Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana, where he was known for his athletic ability, competitive spirit, and willingness to go the extra mile. His time as a student- athlete left a lasting impression on teammates and those who knew him, earning him respect for both his talent and determination.

A lifelong resident of South Bend, Indiana, Richard spent a brief period away while attending college, where he earned an associate degree in political science from Paducah College, in Paducah KY. His curiosity about the world extended well beyond the classroom. He greatly enjoyed thought provoking conversations that reflected his deep appreciation for history and love for the Bible.

Richard was employed at Hearthside Bakery for 15 years, where his dedication and work ethic were well known and appreciated. Those who knew Richard will remember his infectious laughter, his gift for storytelling, and his ability to draw others into spirited debate about sports, politics and history. He had a warm presence and a genuine interest in knowing the truth.

Richard is survived by his wife, Cathleen; his children and grandson; his siblings Carl (Lucille) Sutherland, Joe Sutherland of South Bend, IN , and Thea Butler of Chicago IL; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe Sutherland Sr and Geneva Ross as well as his sister, Ernestine Taylor.

Richard’s legacy lives on through the family he loved, the stories he shared, and the many lives he touched.
