Dennis Michael Jay

Dennis Michael Jay, 59, of South Bend, died after an illness at 11:35 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 28, 1946, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. On June 30, 1984, in South Bend, he married Sue (Fenimore) Jay, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Cynthia Lynn Jay and Brenda (Mark) Wolgamott, both of South Bend, and Dennis M. (Beth) Jay of Granger; four grandchildren, Ben and Tyler Wolgamott, and Joseph and Mary-Elizabeth Powell; and two brothers, E. Neil Jay of Louisville and David A. of Hindsboro, Ill.
He retired from the St. Joseph County Police Department after 20 years of service. He received the FOP Lodge 155 Member of the Year award in 1980. During his career as a police officer he served as road patrolman and later as a public information officer. He was a former FOP chaplain, served on the Governor's Task Force for Drunk Driving, was academy director of the St. Joseph County Law Enforcement Explorer Post, and was involved in the first child fingerprinting campaign in St. Joseph County. Most recently he was an irrigation and design technician for 12 years for Wissco Irrigation Inc. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a master's degree in sociology in 1985 and received his bachelor's degree in 1979 from Indiana University.
His interests included woodworking, gardening, and watching Indiana University basketball. He was a history buff, and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and his dog "Rocky." An avid fisherman, he enjoyed many summers at his cottage at Donnell Lake.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in McGann Funeral Home, where friends may call from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
McGann Funeral Home-University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, is in charge of arrangements.
