Edward Eric Oldenburg

Edward “Ned” E. Oldenburg

Edward “Ned” Oldenburg, 74, of South Bend passed away on Thursday, July 1, 2021 peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He was born on October 7, 1946, in Grosse Pointe, MI to the late Frederick and Lilian (Living) Oldenburg. Ned met the love of his life, Kathleen Mallory, at a high school church youth group event in 1963. They were married on June 15, 1968 in South Bend.

Ned is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Kathy Oldenburg; their daughters Shanon Oldenburg of South Bend, IN and Sarah (Kevin) Jantzi of Valparaiso, IN; sisters, Ellen (Matt) Bach and Tina Gibson; brothers, Fred (Eleana) Oldenburg and Dennis Oldenburg; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.  In addition to his parents, Ned was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Joan Oldenburg.

After graduating from Clay High School, Ned obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from Valparaiso University in 1968. He had a long and successful career as a civil engineer for the city of Detroit, Clyde E. Williams in South Bend and Woolpert LLC in Indianapolis.  He also had a passion and a knack for computers that was ahead of his time. In fact, when he retired from Woolpert in 2013, he was working as an IT supervisor. Upon retirement, Ned and Kathy moved back to South Bend to be closer to their daughters, Shanon and Sarah.

Ned was a member and volunteer at Christ the King Lutheran Church for 15 years. Marriage, family, and faith were the primary focus of Ned’s life. Those who knew Ned recognized his quiet and kind outlook on life. He also had a dry sense of humor that will be dearly missed. Ned had more hobbies than time; fishing, hunting, woodworking, stained glass, fixing computers, repairing clocks, and taking his family to the movies. He also cherished the outdoors, birdwatching, and of course, his loyal cat “Pickles”.

A funeral service for Ned will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at 11:00am at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 17195 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family at the church from 10:00-11:00am prior to the service. Palmer Funeral Homes--Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Christ the King Lutheran Church, 17195 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN 46635, or to the Center for Hospice Care, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
