Gerald Eugene Haney

Jan. 29, 1929 - Jan. 8, 2021

Gerald (Jerry) Eugene Haney passed away peacefully on January 8, 2021 surrounded by the love of his two daughters by his side, in San Francisco, California. Jerry was born on January 29, 1929 in South Bend, Indiana to Bernard Edward Haney and Ann Agatha (Nemeth) Haney. He was the oldest of three sons, brother to Thomas and James. He was married to Mary Florine Williams for seventeen years until Mary passed away in January 1971.

Jerry grew up in South Bend, Indiana on a farm. He attended Washington Clay High School, where he was a star basketball player and homecoming king. He graduated in 1946.

Jerry enlisted in the United States Army in 1946. He served in the Korean War through 1948. He utilized the GI Bill to attend Indiana University in Bloomington. He graduated with a BS in Finance in 1952. It is there that he met the love of his life, Mary Williams. Jerry and Mary were married on January 9, 1954 in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. They had two daughters, Linda and Laura. They loved spending time with family and friends at the lake house in Windsor, Canada as well as boating and fishing on Lake Michigan. Jerry worked for Chrysler, in Detroit, as an International Auditor, where he traveled extensively overseas.

In 1967 Jerry accepted a new job in Chicago, as a Chief Financial Officer, for International Harvester. Jerry, Mary, and the girls moved to Lake Bluff, Illinois, where they shared many great times with new friends. Jerry earned his MBA in Finance from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business, in 1969. After Mary passed away, Jerry raised his two young daughters. He was a devoted and loving father who shared his love of travel with his girls visiting California, New England, Cape Cod, and the Carolinas.

Jerry moved to San Francisco in 1989 to live near his daughters. He continued to work, holding positions as Chief Financial Officer at FM Productions and Salem Lutheran Home. He was also Board President for his Home Owners Association for many years and Treasurer of his church, Shepherd of the Hills. He volunteered at Score/SBA, San Francisco, where he coached young entrepreneurs eager to start their own businesses. He was President for many of his twenty-one years, receiving many accolades.

After retiring Jerry traveled around the world, enjoying trips to Ireland, Scotland, Italy, New Zealand, and Africa. He loved classical and jazz music, attending the San Francisco Symphony, dancing, and a good vodka martini on Friday night. He participated in many sports, such as tennis, skiing, golf, paddleball, and ping-pong. He was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on the San Francisco Forty Niners and his favorite team the Golden State Warriors.

His greatest joy was his family and “Jer” loved all his girls. He never missed a birthday, graduation, wedding or holiday. He always appreciated family celebrations, a great meal, and a nice glass of wine. His warm smile reflected that “Life is Good” and those around him always felt that. We will always raise a glass to our beloved “Jer” who we will all miss beyond words and love dearly. We are so grateful for the time spent together and the cherished memories.

Jerry is survived by his daughters Linda Lockyer (Doug), Laura Grady (Sebastian), two granddaughters, Jenna and Casey Grady and his younger brother Thomas Haney (Houston, TX).

A Memorial Service will be live streamed from Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in San Francisco on Friday, January 29, at 11 am PST. An in person celebration of Jerry’s life will be held later when gathering is safe. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to the American Heart Association at heart.org.
