Maureen “Mo” Kay Sowell, a cherished soul known for her unwavering love for her family and her gentle spirit, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2024, in Mishawaka, Indiana, at the age of 76. Born on November 21, 1947, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Marilyn June and Arnold “Red” Homer Gardner, Maureen's life was a testament to the power of love, dedication, and the simple joys that make a life well-lived.
Maureen's journey through life was shared with her beloved husband, Larry Sowell, who she married on August 3, 1968 in South Bend, Indiana, who stood by her side in a loving partnership that was a cornerstone of her existence. Together, they raised a family that was the center of Maureen's world: her daughter, Shannon (Bradley) Rutkowski of South Bend, Indiana; her sons, Sean (Lori) Sowell of St. Augustine, Florida and Shane (Jennifer) Sowell of Prospect, Kentucky. Maureen's role as a mother was one she cherished deeply, and her guidance and affection shaped the lives of her children in countless ways.
She is survived by her sister Colleen (Tom) Piech of South Bend, Indiana; her sister Kathleen (Randy) Jackson of South Bend, Indiana; and her brother Kenneth Gardner of Heiskell, Tennessee.
Maureen's legacy continues through her adored grandchildren: Tyler and Bailey Rutkowski, Tristan, Alyssa, Becca, and Emma Sowell. She took immense joy in their achievements and adventures, and her influence will live on in their hearts and characters.
Professionally, Maureen worked for Notre Dame Concessions and dedicated herself to her role as a Card Merchandiser for American Greetings, where she was known for her meticulous attention to detail and her warm, welcoming demeanor.
Beyond her work and family, Maureen had a passion for the simple pleasures in life. She found solace and delight in feeding and watching birds, an activity that reflected her appreciation for nature's beauty and serenity. Her love for jigsaw puzzles showcased her patience and her enjoyment of a challenge, while her time spent with her grandchildren underscored the depth of her love and commitment to her family.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 pm on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel 17033 Cleveland Rd. South Bend, Indiana 46635. Friends may visit with family from 10:00 am until the time of service. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.
