Vernon Rueben Helmen, Jr., 86, of Le Center, died at his home on Friday, July 16, 2010. Visitation will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Thursday, July 22 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral Services will be at the Church on Thursday, July 22 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Gorman Lake Cemetery in Cordova. Military Honors will be provided by the Le Center Area Veteran's Honor Guard. Arrangements are with Le Center Funeral Home. Memorials are preferred.

Vernon, the son of Vernon, Sr. & Margaret (Ackerberg) Helmen, was born in Chicago on August 8, 1923. He served in the United States Army during WWII from December 7, 1942, to February 26, 1946. Before his retirement in 1991, Vernon worked as the Curator of Anthropology at the St. Paul Science Museum and later as Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Hamline University and ran several programs for the Minnesota Community College System at Normandale. He also worked with and was adopted into the Prairie Island Dakota Indian Tribe.

He was Past Commander of the Kilkenny VFW, a member of the Le Center Legion Club and Sigma Alpha Apisilon.

Vernon is survived by four children. He is preceded in death by his parents.
