Florence Barbara McCombs

Florence Barbara Middleton

Apr. 20, 1923 - Dec. 1, 2021

Florence McCombs Middleton, lived all of her 98 1/2 years in Granger, IN from April 20, 1923 to December 1, 2021. "She was born, she lived, she died" as she would say. Yet, those who knew and loved her are grateful to say that she lived a strong, independent life in her home of 75 years until that December day.

She was born to Roy McCombs and May Kownover McCombs and grew up on the family farm in Granger, the youngest of six children. Her brothers were, Andrew, Willis and Daniel: with sisters, Mariam Pillow and Eleanor Tejchma. She maintained great pride of her McCombs, Kownover and Granger heritage.

On June 2, 1945, she and Howard E. Middleton married in Granger. Howard passed away on May 23, 1986. They were lifelong members of the Granger Presbyterian Church.

Her only son James Edward Middleton, with his independently happy life since July 21, 1953, preceded her in death on July 20, 2010.

Surviving is her daughter Beth (Terry) Lorenz of Granger, granddaughters, Aimee Cambrin of Granger and Callie Lorenz of Huntington, IN, along with many nieces and nephews. A special thanks to her 50 + years friends, Patrick and Steve for their visits, friendship and breakfasts with Florence.

Florence graduated from the then Clay High School. After graduation she was employed with the Wilson Brothers Shirt Factory, South Bend. She then went on to become a secretary for over 10 years with Associates Investment Company, South Bend. Florence finally retired (from taxpaying work) after 20 years as a clerk with the Granger Post Office.

All the while she enjoyed Notre Dame football and the Cubs. She loved flowers, nature and never turned away a stray animal. She was admired for her extremely independent, hardworking, selfless lifestyle: a true inspiration. Quite a Lady!

She always had a smile on her face and sincerity in her heart with a quick mind and a twinkle in her eye to tease or joke with all. So, do what you want...smile, laugh, open your eyes, love and live on. We that knew her warming smile and laugh, for some of her 98 years will miss those each day.

As per her request, arrangements are entrusted to the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home in Edwardsburg, MI. No services will take place. A private burial will be held at a later date at Smith Chapel Cemetery, Niles, MI.

Memorial donations may be made to: The Meow Mission, P.O. Box 192, Mishawaka, IN 46546 or to Logan Community Resources, 2505 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend, IN 46615
