Dale E. Shelley, 74, of 17262 N. 66th Lane, Glendale, Ariz., died on Monday afternoon, April 6, at Sincere Home Care Facility, Phoenix, Ariz.

Dale was born on July 1, 1923, in Rio Grande City, Texas, the son of Dale E. Shelley, Sr. and Frances Kelling Shelley, moving to South Bend, Ind., as a young child.

On January 23, 1946, he married the former Betty Kinney of Plymouth, Ind. She died on June 20, 1995.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael D. and Sherry Shelley, and his two granddaughters, Michelle and Melissa Shelley, all of Peoria, Ariz., as well as two sisters, Hertha J. (Mrs. Edward) Sowell of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Carol S. Lynch of Elkhart, Ind.

Dale was a 1941 graduate of Washington-Clay High School, where he played basketball.

He served in the Pacific during World War II with the Army Corp. of Engineers. After returning from the service, he was employed his entire adult life, until 1996, in the grocery business with stores in Indiana, Michigan, California, Nevada and Arizona. He loved to play golf in his free time.

Graveside services were conducted at 11 a.m. on April 9, in Phoenix Memorial Park.
