William Henry Kirkwood Jr. (Bill), 86, of New Carlisle, IN, formerly of Albion, NY, passed away Wednesday, July 25, in Hamilton Communities in New Carlisle, IN.
Bill served in the U.S. Navy in WWII on the USS Enterprise CV6 and USS Cowpens CVL25 (among others) and in Korea on the USS Begor APD-127 with a rank of Storekeeper G Third Class. Between his tours of duty in the Navy, he worked in the Singer Sewing Machine cabinet shop in South Bend, IN. During his career in construction management he was a section project supervisor on the Indiana Toll Road from right-of-way acquisition through completion. He worked as safety engineer and architect's representative for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Northrup, Kaelber & Kopf and Albert Kahn Associates on a variety of projects including the Civic Center and John Hancock Center in Chicago, and the Kodak Marketing and Education Center and United States Courthouse and Federal Office Building in Rochester, NY.
He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and traveling.
He was born on September 5, 1925 in Mishawaka, IN, to William Henry and Jennie Katherine (Tucker) Kirkwood Sr.
He was preceded in death by his brother John Kirkwood of Claypool, IN, and his sister Barbara (Jarvis) Robbins of South Bend, IN.
He is survived by his son, Craig (Evelyn) Kirkwood of Edwardsburg, MI, his daughter Tracy (Steve) Bibler of Elkhart, IN, and his sister-in-law Norma Kirkwood of Claypool, IN.
A nephew, Kirk (Linda) Robbins of South Bend, IN, and nieces Kathy Jo (Tom) Miller of Lafayette, IN; Kristy (Mark) Sprott of Austin ,TX; Rhonda Kirkwood of Warsaw, IN, and Jeni Kirkwood of Kokomo also survive.
He had two grandchildren Chris (Melissa) Lello of Elkhart, IN, and Amy (Jeff) Abigt of Lakeville, IN, and four great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Tina Schleede of Waterport, NY, for her friendship and aid to Bill while he resided in Albion, NY, and the staff at the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care in South Bend. The family especially wants to thank the staff at Hamilton Communities who provided care and camaraderie during his years of residence there.
A memorial gathering for the family will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions can be made to the Greencroft Foundation for the Hamilton Grove Courtyard, 1721 Greencroft Blvd. PO Box 819, Goshen, IN 46527 or charity of the donor's choice. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.
