SOUTH BEND - We say goodbye and celebrate the life of Joyce Nadine Snyder, 76, who passed away on November 21, 2008. Her health recently spiraled down after years contending with heart failure and partial paralysis. Her last few days were in the care of Memorial Hospital and Hospice House of South Bend.
Joyce was born on September 29, 1932, in Oakwood, Marion County, Missouri, to Charles Marshall Kane and Jessie Marie (Green) Kane. At the age of nine, she and her mother moved to Elkhart, Indiana. Her mother was remarried to Albert Fredrick Quitt and moved to South Bend, Indiana. As Joyce Nadine Kane, she married Gerald Lee Snyder on November 28, 1953. Joyce and Gerald lived most of their 55 years of marriage in South Bend.
Her father, mother, infant brother and stepfather preceded her in death. Joyce is survived by her husband. She is also survived by her daughter, Anyce Marie (Snyder) and husband, Steven John Bothast, with grandson, Thomas Schuyler Bothast of South Bend, and granddaughter, Jessica Marie Bothast of Downers Grove, Illinois, who is engaged to be married to Kareem Hammad on May 9, 2009; her daughter, Jennifer Lee (Snyder) and husband, Brian Keith Carlson, with granddaughters, Kolleen Lee and Gillian Lee of Vancouver, Washington; her son, Joel Lee Snyder, and wife, Margaret Kagel Snyder, with grandsons, Jacob Schuyler and Lucas Ethan of South Bend.
Until recently, Joyce had a very active life. She graduated from Washington Clay High School with the class of 1950. Her classmates were among her lifelong friends. She received an honorary degree from Tri-State University upon her husband's graduation with a degree in mechanical engineering. She worked at Standard Oil in South Bend as a comptometer operator while Gerald was in college. Joyce and Gerald lived in Wichita, Kansas, while Gerald worked at The Boeing Airplane Company. Joyce returned home after Gerald was drafted in the Army. Gerald was in the 1st Infantry Division stationed in Germany and later at Fort Riley, Kansas. Joyce moved to Manhattan, Kansas, to be with her husband until he was released from active duty. Joyce was a loving and devoted mother. She did not put up with any nonsense from her children. Joyce worked for 10 years at Valley Lea Dairies as a receptionist to help put her children through college. Joyce traveled extensively with her family and with her husband on his business trips. She didn't really enjoy card games, but she and Gerald played in a couples bridge group for over 30 years. In accordance with Joyce's instruction, her remains will be offered for medical purposes and then cremated. Her ashes are to be scattered from the old Darden Road Bridge.
There will not be a viewing. A private celebration of life services will be held at a later date. The family suggests any memorial donations be made to The Hospice House, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437. The Welsheimer Family Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
