Orthul Eugene "Chip" Carter

GRANGER - Orthul Eugene "Chip" Carter, 86, of Granger, IN, died at 5:55 a.m., Friday, June 29, 2012 in Beardsley House, Elkhart, IN. Mr. Carter was born May 12, 1926 in South Bend to the late Mary Elizabeth (Webber) and Archie Carter and had recently lived in Daytona Beach until moving to Granger in 2010.

On May 21, 1948 in South Bend he married Marian A. Thompson, who survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Julie A. Carter of Mishawaka, IN; a son, Bruce D. Carter (Nancy) of Elkhart, IN; six grandchildren, Sam Carter (Petra), Kimberly Miller (Ron), Adam Carter (Sarah), Megan Scott, Mary Keever (Mark) and Dawn Carter; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Maejil Newman of Fort Walton Beach, FL.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Sue Scott, and three sisters, Ellen Luchowski, Fritchie Stewart, and Pansie Williams. Chip was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his time on Tharpe Lake, where he built a family cottage in 1953. He raised his family at Tharpe Lake and taught all of his children how to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors. In Florida he loved to fish from the pier and was an avid surf fisherman. He was a loving and caring father and grandfather and taught each of his children and grandchildren all the words to "Froggy Went a Court'n". He taught all of his children and grandchildren how to fish and enjoyed watching them catch their first fish. He was a photographer and was very good at capturing candid photos of people at their best. Chip was employed at the Bendix Mishawaka missile plant, where he worked on the Talos Missile. He was proud of his work and enjoyed the respect of his co-workers. He was loved by family and friends and will be missed by all.

Funeral services will be held at noon, Monday, July 2nd in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Cremation will follow with private burial in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park at a later date. Friends may call in the funeral home from 2 until 5 p.m. today, July 1st and on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.
