Marian Audrey Carter, 88, of South Daytona, FL died Wednesday evening in Florida Hospital, Holly Hill, FL. Mrs. Carter was born February 14, 1927 in South Bend to the late Ruth (Syson) and Dewey Thompson.

On May 21, 1948, Marian married Orthul E. “Chip” Carter in South Bend, who preceded her in death June 29, 2012. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Sue Scott. She is survived by, a son, Bruce D. Carter (Nancy) of Elkhart, IN and a daughter Julie A. Carter of South Daytona, FL.; six grandchildren, Adam, Dawn, Kimberly, Mary, Megan and Sam; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marlene Bishop of Michigan City, IN and Mildred Cain of Niles, MI.


Marian was raised in South Bend and graduated from Washington Clay High School. She worked at I & M in South Bend. After marrying Chip, they raised their family in South Bend and then moved to South Daytona, Florida in 1992.


Marian enjoyed fishing with her beloved husband and family times at the family lake cottage on Tharpe Lake in Michigan. Marian liked to dance with her husband and was active in square dance and clog dance clubs. Marian was happiest when she was with her children and grandchildren cooking, playing cards and teaching them crafts. She will be remembered as a loving and nurturing mother and grandmother. Marian loved spending time with her friends and was loved by everyone that she touched. She was an avid sports fan of Notre Dame football and Orlando Magic basketball. “Grandma” gave her grandchildren fond memories of games of SKIP-BO, bunny cakes with no ears, making chocolate candies at the Hepler Street home, fish fries and fireworks on the 4th of July.


The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. on Friday, August 28th at Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 29th in Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, with Rev. Garry Fisher from the Community Congregational Church officiating. Committal services and burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
